 Dr. Michael Ozner
More
Several decades ago, Dr. Michael Ozner had an epiphany in Miami. After a busy day of performing balloon angioplasties on cardiac patients he came home, opened a journal, and read about Ancel Keys and his study of the traditional diet of Crete, where people had a very low risk of cardiovascular disease. He began to research the Mediterranean Diet and became excited about the idea of helping his patients understand the importance of a knife and fork and a pair of walking shoes. Inspired, he created a booklet on the Mediterranean Diet and began handing it out. His office started getting requests from people all across the country, asking for info on "that Miami Mediterranean Diet." Dr. Ozner's next step was to write a book, The Miami Mediterranean Diet, and donate all profits to the American Heart Association. Today, as the medical director of Wellness and Prevention at Baptist Health South Florida, and at the Cardiovascular Prevention Institute of South Florida, Dr. Ozner continues to advise his patients to follow the Mediterranean Diet. He reports that within his own practice he has reduced the risk of cardiovascular events by 80 percent. Heart disease is not inevitable, he says, and through diet we have a chance to stop this disease in its tracks and make a dent in our skyrocketing health care costs. Dr. Ozner continues to lecture about the Mediterranean Diet and urges his fellow physicians to become more involved in nutrition and prevention.
